Field Sketching
I started field sketching during the summer of 2021. One time when visiting campus for the week, I walked to the lake and sat on a bench, waiting to see what birds I would see swim, walk, or fly by. As I waited, I used my watercolors to capture the area around me. Once I saw a bird, I used my binoculars to get a closer look. Still using my binoculars, I sketched a Great Blue Heron and its different poses as it moved. I then took out my camera and snapped a few quick photos to use as a reference incase the bird were to leave. After capturing photos and video, I used my watercolors to add some color and my micron pens to add some definition and movement.
Some essentials that I take with me include:
-
Binoculars
-
Sketchbook
-
Watercolors
-
Watercolor brush pens
-
Field guide
-
Camera
-
Pencils, pens, eraser
-
Snacks & water
Field sketching is a great way to tune into the living things around you! It allows you to notice details that may have otherwise gone unnoticed, and this helps to identify species in the field!
